Shumak Huayhuash Trek

The circuit of the Huayhuash range of 10 days is a difficult and exhausting hike, but beautiful, quiet and little frequented. Shumak Huayhuash this route is suitable for the most adventurous walker and used to walking on difficult terrain for many hours in a day. Some of the days are quite long, with more than 7 hours of walking and all in high elevations.

The circular route around the impressive Huayhuash range rewards us with views from the San Antonio viewpoint of the most splendid landscapes on earth. But nevertheless the height, the distance and the duration demand certain experience in the participants, a good physical condition and a suitable adaptation to the height. For this we recommend.

Altitude Max: 5025 Paso San Antonio.

Difficulty: Moderate / Strenuous.

Daily walk: 5 to 7 hours.

Location: Cordillera Huayhuash.

Best seasons: April / October.

Guide

A certified professional trekking guide,  who speaks Spanish and English if required trained in 1st Aid, risk management and assessment and responsibility to provide overall standard of excellence in service quality.

Cook

A professional cook who prepares a wide variety of healthy and delicious dishes, and who is trained to cook in a hygienic manner mountain.

Muleteer

The muleteer (arriero) is in charge of loading the donkeys, looking after them and guiding them to camp.

The number of donkeys provided depends on the size of de the group.

One horse accompanies the group for emergency purposes.

From you hotel in huaraz to the starting point of trek, an from the finishing point of the trek back to your hotel in Huaraz.

Day 01: Huaraz (3090m) – Cuartelwuain (4180m)

We left Huaraz 7.30am.
.South of Huaraz through Chiquian, town of Llamac, Pocpa and Cuartelwuain.
The trip lasts approximately 5 hours to the Cuartelwuain camp.

Day 02: Cuartelwuain – Kacananpunta Pass (4690m) – Mitucocha Lake (4200m)

.Breakfast.
We start our hike the first step Kacananpunta and enjoy the view of the valleys.
.We drive through the valley until we reach Camp Janca.
.In the afternoon visit Mitucocha lake closer, and a mountain like Jirishanca Grande.

Day 03: Lake Mitucocha – Yanayana Pass (4650m) – Carhuacocha Lake (4138m)

.Breakfast
. We start with a very easy climb to the Yanayana pass.
.We drive through the Yanayana valley to the Carhuacocha lake.
.Where we will enjoy a fabulous view of the east face of the Yerupaja 6630m.
. Walk lasts 5 hours enjoying the scenery.

Day 04: Carhuacocha Lake – Siula Punta Pass (4830m) – Huayhuash (4350m)

.We got up very early to see the sunrise and magic of colors in the mountains
.Breakfast
.We start our walk to the Siula viewpoint.
Where we have a view of the lakes Quisillococha, Siulacocha, Gangrajanca.
.Continued our route to the Siula punta pass another unforgettable sight.
Then we move through the butcher valley to the Huayhuash camp.
The walk lasts 6 to 7 hours approximately.

Day 05: Huayhuash – Portachuelo Pass (4700m) – Viconga Lake (4365m).

.Breakfast.
We leave with the view of the mountains of Trapecio, Suerococha, Puscanturpa.
.Up to the pass Huayhuash portachuelo, another spectacular view to see mountain group of the Cordillera Raura.
Then we descend through the valley of pumarinri to the thermal baths of Viconga.
The hike lasts 5 hours, and then a relax in the thermal waters.

Day 06: Viconga Lake – Cuyoc Pass (4980m) – Elefante Pampa (4400m).

Breakfast
.We start with the Cuyoc pass, where we have another beautiful view.
We descend through the Huanacpatay valley to the Elefante pampa field.
Then lunch and rest.
The walk lasts 4 to 5 hours.

Day 07: Elefante Pampa – San Antonio Pass (5025m) – Huayllapa (3490m).

.Breakfast
We start our trek to the famous San Antonio Pass.
Where we have a beautiful view of the mountain Sarapo, Siula, Yerupaja, and the lake of Sarapococha, Jurao.
. Then we go through the Calinca valley, passing through a cultivation field until we reach the town of Huayllapa where we spend the night.
The walk lasts from 6 to 7 hours

Day 08: Huayllapa – Tapush Punta Pass (4770m) – Angocancha (4300m)

Breakfast.
We start to climb up the Huancho valley where we have a view of the Diablo Mudo Mountains, Rajucollata, Angocancha.
At the end the Tapush pass point where we have view of the Huallanca mountain range.
Descent through the Gashpapampa valley to the Angocancha field.
The walk lasts 6 hours

9

Day 09: Angocancha – Llaucha Punta Pass (4850m) – Jahuacocha Lake (4050m).

We leave with destination Llaucha punta tip where we have a view of the valley of Huacrish.
In the step we go through the top of the Huacrish zero the unforgettable view where you can see.
The whole chain of the Huayhuash mountain range, and the beautiful lakes Jahuacocha and Solteracocha.
Then descend to Jahuacocha where we spend the night
The walk lasts 5 hours

Day 10: Jahuacocha Lake – Village of Llamac – Huaraz..

Breakfast.
We went through the Achín valley, and then we continued our trek through the water channel to Pampa Llamac.
Then we go back to the town of Llamac where our private transportation does not wait.
Return to the city of Huaraz, the trip lasts 5 hours.
