Best Trekking Season

The best time to trek in the cordillera blanca is during the dry season, from April to September. Known as the “ Andean summer”, the weather is usually stable with plenty of sunshine and clear skies, although rain and snow can come at any time of year in the mountains.

Weather

The entire Cordillera Blanca has a semi-dry and semi-cold climate, with an average maximum temperature of 23.9° C (75.0° F) and a minimum of 1.1° C (33.98° F). The climate is very unpredictable, even in the dry season it can rain. During the days it can vary from hot to very frigid temperatures, included rain and strong winds or snow over 4800 meters above sea level. It usually starts getting cloudy more often in early September. October and November are the months when after 2-3pm you can count on afternoon showers.

What to bring:

After a total of 3 hours by vehicle from Huaraz, we reach the trailhead at Cebollapampa (3,900m), where our trek to Laguna 69 begins.

The trek is usually about 2-3 hours of ascent with several stops before reaching Laguna 69. The beautiful scenery is a 360° panorama including the vertical granite walls of Chacraraju (6,108m), the peaks of Nevado Pisco (one at 5,752m), Nevado Huascarán (6,768 m), Nevado Chopicalqui (6,345m) with the huge Nevado Yanapaccha (5,469m) along the trek. Return and descend via the same trail, about 2 hours, to Cebollapampa from where we return by private vehicle to Huaraz.
